Sand Castles At Dublin Castle

August 2010 started off rainy, but this did not deter a group of artists working in the open at Dublin Castle. Several tons of fine sand were delivered to the castle courtyard and than transformed into impressive sand sculptures.

Sand sculpture group Duthain Dealbh occupied the over the upper courtyard of Dublin Castle for the month of August in order to transform 80 tonnes of sand into sand sculptures.

The sculpture group, whose name means 'Fleeting Sculpture', created four sculptures around the theme of Vikings, to complement the Dublin Viking Festival which takes place on August 21 and 22.

According the the artists "It takes four days to soak, compact and harden the sand into large blocks, making it more resistant and durable before the sculptors start to chip away to "find the sculptures inside"
